Chase Vault

The Chase Crypt ( engl. Chase Vault) is a burial site at the Christ Church Parish Church graveyard in Christ Church Parish, Barbados.

Named after the family tomb is the Chase, which had built the tomb in 1807. By 1820 six family members were buried in the tomb - but the pallbearers took the lead coffins at every funeral in another position before they were turned off.

Governor Lord Combermere has then decided in 1819 to seal the coffins and tomb as well as at the bottom to apply sand to get intruders by means of footprints on the ropes. In April 1820, the governor left the vault open again: the seal was intact, but leaning on the heavy lead coffins at the door and the other coffins were also pushed back.

It was then decided the coffins outside the tomb alone to bury the church cemetery. The tomb has since been empty.

Similar incidents were reported from the older Williams tomb.
