Chassal

Chassal is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chassal is located on 362 m above sea level. M., about seven kilometers west-southwest of the town of Saint- Claude ( a straight line ). The village is located in the Jura, in the valley of Bienne, on the south side of the river in a valley widening, at the foot of the ridge of the Cret de Surmontant.

The area of ​​5.20 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part is occupied by an approximately 0.5 km wide Talniederung of Bienne, which here flows from east to west through the flat valley floor. On the northern edge of the valley opposite Molinges is the karst spring, which is among others fed by the waters of Lac de l' Abbaye. The flat alluvial plain flanked by steep and partially traversed by bands of rock slopes on both sides. In the south of the border along the slope of Larrivoire runs, and the area extends into the valley of the Longviry, which flows below Chassal in the Bienne. To the north, the municipality's area extends from a narrow wooded ridge, on the 665 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Chassal is achieved. The area of Chassal is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut- Jura.

To Chassal include the hamlet Marignat (360 m above sea level. M. ) on the northern side of the Bienne as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Chassal are Lavans -lès -Saint -Claude in the north, Saint -Claude in the east, the south and Larrivoire Molinges and Pratz in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Chassal in 855 under the name Cassenatis. The place was the property of the Abbey of Saint -Claude. Chassal was in the Middle Ages the center of a dominion which was dependent on the abbey. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To a field change occurred in 1822, when the previously independent Marignat was incorporated into Chassal.

Middle of the 18th century was started at Chassal with the mining of marble, which was edited from 1827 in the Marmorschleiferei the neighboring village Molinges. The yellowish stone bears the name Brocatelle. During the 19th century, Chassal developed into an industrial site. The water power of the Bienne was used for the operation of mills and sawmills. Population

With 480 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Chassal one of the small towns in the Jura. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the region of 350 people, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and infrastructure

Chassal is an embossed by the industrial activity village today. It has various operations of small and medium industries, which together employ about 300 workers. The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road that leads from Oyonnax to Saint -Claude. The nearest links to the motorway A404 ( Saint -Martin- du- Frêne - Oyonnax ) is located at a distance of around 19 km. Chassal has a station on the railway line from Oyonnax to Saint -Claude.
