Chasse (casket)

The term refers to a reliquary shrine in which the relics of one or more saint are kept.

Reliquaries known in many religions: Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.

Known reliquaries in Germany are

  • In the Aachen Cathedral: Marie shrine with diapers and loin cloth of Jesus, Mary and dress of the decapitation of John the Baptist
  • In Cologne Cathedral: Three Kings shrine with the relics of the Magi
  • In the parish church of St. Hildegard and St. John the Baptist in Eibingen in the Rheingau: relics of Hildegard von Bingen.
  • In the Marburg Elisabeth Church: reliquary of Saint Elizabeth (who, however, since 1539 no longer contains relics )
  • In Bentlage monastery in Rheine (Nordrhein- Westfalen)
  • The shrine in Breisach Stephansmünster
  • Shrine of the will of Bold Berkheim in Berkheim in Upper Swabia.
  • In Hildesheim Cathedral: Shrine of hectoliters. Epiphanius of Pavia and shrine of St. Godehard
