Chasseral

The Chasseral at 1,607 m above sea level. M. the highest peak in the Bernese Jura, in the northwest of the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. His former German name Gestler is sometimes still used in the region, however, is not known in the rest of Switzerland.

The Chasseral is part of the Jura Mountains. The 20 km long Chasseral chain is bounded on the north by the valley of Saint- Imier, in the east by the clefts of Suze ( Suze French ), on the south by Lake Biel and west through the Val de Ruz. On the southern slope of the Chasseral is situated at 800 m above sea level. M. the extensive plateau Montagne de Diesse ( German Tessenberg ) with several places. To the north- west to the valley of Saint- Imier extends the Combe Grède, a steep ravine, which is now designated as a nature reserve.

Up to an altitude of 1,400 m, the Chasseral is forested, about there are mountain pastures. They are rich in alpine perennials, ensure that in the summer for colorful flowering aspects. On the slopes grows in handsome figure, for example, the yellow gentian. The rocks are covered among other dwarf bluebells. From the summit, numerous sinkholes are seen, which have formed in the fractured and karstified limestone.

80 meters east of the mountain summit is the transmitter Nods Chasseral.

Both of Saint- Imier in the north as well as from Nods to the Montagne de Diesse is the height of the Chasseral in the summer months by a road accessible, which crosses the mountain range at the Col du Chasseral. Also operates in summer from both sides depending on a bus line ( between Chasseral Nods and weekends only).

In winter, skiing is above Nods possible on the western slopes at Les Bugnenets as well as on the south side. A promising trail runs along the entire mountain ridge. In fine weather and clear view offers from Chasseral from an Alpine panorama, stretching from the Säntis to Mont Blanc.
