Château-Chinon (Ville)

Château- Chinon (Ville ) is a town in the department of Nièvre in the Burgundy region. It is regarded as one of the main locations of the Morvan region and has 2098 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). It extends over an area of 4.28 km ².

Particularity of the place name

The existing until the French Revolution to Château - Chinon was divided after the revolution in two communities: Château- Chinon Intra-Muros and Château- Chinon Extra - Muros, which later in Château- Chinon ( Ville) and Château- Chinon ( Campagne ) renamed. The names " (Ville ) " or " ( Campagne ) " are therefore an official part of the place name.

Another peculiarity is that it officially until 2008 (that is, the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques ) no space between " Château- Chinon " and the explanatory addition was, that is, the communities, " Château- Chinon (Ville ) "and" Château- Chinon ( Campagne ) " were called. This peculiarity was not respected in daily use and is suspended for 2009.

History

Château- Chinon looks back on a long history. By no later than the 8th century there was a fortified castle of Chinon Knight. In the 12th and 13th century by the building of a massive city wall. As vassals of the dukes of Burgundy, the Knights of Chinon in the Middle Ages substances and honey products had to deliver to the court of Dijon. Louis XIII. could grind the walls at the beginning of the 17th century and gave one of his advisers, the castle of Chinon, which was remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries into a baroque country house.
