Château de Montfort

The Montfort castle stands on a craggy rock, 90 meters above the Dordogne, at the end of the famous river loop " Cingle de Montfort " in the municipality of Vitrac in the French department of Dordogne.

The facility is located in an area surrounded by enclosing the park and was extensively restored in the 19th century. Of the medieval predecessors nothing remains. The ruins of the left wing was rebuilt, the tower dates from the 15th century, the rest of the 16th century. Previously, with pieces from the time of Louis XIII. and Louis XIV furnished rooms of the basement open to visitors; now Montfort Castle is no longer visible.

In his history of Montfort Castle was conquered three times, burned down and rebuilt. In the Albigensian crusade in the 13th century Simon IV de Montfort took the castle. During the Hundred Years War the castle was under Louis XI. and then destroyed under Henry IV.
