The castle was built in several stages. The oldest part is a rectangular donjon. This was one of the corner towers of the rectangular core castle with its eight -meter-high circular walls. The strongest attachment is the round keep, with 11 meters in diameter and 40 meters high, which dominates the rest of the castle. This tower protrudes from the ring wall and defended this by flanking fire, what a dungeon in the interior of the castle courtyard can not afford. The gate is protected by a drawbridge and barbican.

The Najac castle is situated on the summit of a hill difficult to access in a loop of the river, which makes it difficult to attack. A second lower ring wall lies further down the hill to the main castle.
