Castle Sedan

The castle of Sedan (French Château de Sedan ) is located in the French town of Sedan, which is close to the Belgium Ardennes department in the Champagne -Ardenne region in north - eastern France. The medieval castle with its 35,000 square meters, extending over seven floors, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The castle is classified as a monument historique since January 4, 1965.

History

In 1424, Eberhard II of the Marck - Arenberg began with the construction of the castle of Sedan. Originally there was a Benedictine monastery, which was first mentioned in 1306. Now, a mansion was built around a church with two towers within six years, with parts of the dungeon were built from the monastery. As Eberhard II died reinforced his son John II of Marck - Arenberg the castle, but it was only his grandson Robert I. de La Marck finished the construction work. In 1530 the fortress walls of the mansion were modernized by the construction of a ring wall and supplemented by artillery ramparts.

Henry de Turenne was born in 1611 in the castle of Sedan.

Today the castle is a tourist attraction. It houses the tourist information center and a museum. In addition, there is a hotel in the old walls.
