History

The common origins of Château Batailley and Chateau Haut - Batailley are uncertain, and hence there is the name of several assumptions. The proximity of the name to the French word bataille ( battle) nourishes the plausible thesis that the usable area of the Château of Bordeaux belonged to the defenses during the Hundred Years War. From various wine estates in the region such as the nearby Château Latour such use is known. An alternative explanation speaks of a winery or merchant named Batailley, who played a role in the history of the estate.

In the 18th century, written mentions find the winery. Château Batailley belonged to the Saint -Martin family. At the end of the century, the estate passed to the three children of the family by inheritance. The two daughters Marianne and Marthe Saint -Martin sold its stake in 1791 to Jean -Guillaume Pécholier. As Pécholier died in 1816, a large part of the estate went to a public sale to Daniel Guestier from a trading company Barton & Guestier (see also the history of Chateau Leoville - Barton ). It is narrated that Admiral Jacques de Bedout lived at Château Batailley after his leave of absence until his death in 1818.

Guestier bought over time added smaller parcels and invested in the land, in the wine cellar and into the house. When he died in 1847, the estate had a good reputation, and the foundation for the good performance in the classification of 1855 was laid.
