Château Neercanne

Castle Neercanne (also Château Neercanne or Kasteel Agimont ) is located in the Dutch city of Maastricht near the Belgian- Dutch border.

Baron Wolf Daniël van Dopff, then military governor of Maastricht was, from 1698 built the castle. He used the castle as a farm and guest house, where he held his receptions and parties. One of the most famous visitor was 1717 Tsar Peter the Great. Daniël van Wolf Dopff died 1718.

1747 Neercanne was the residence of " Prins Karel van Waldeck ", commander of the Dutch troops Nopper used. A century later, the castle passed into the hands of Baron de Cler. Thereafter, Ignatius de Thier owner of the property. During the final determination of the boundaries between the Netherlands and Belgium in 1839 Ignatius de Thier was responsible for the whereabouts of the Château Neercanne on Dutch territory.

The great-granddaughter of Baron de Thier, Louise Euphrasine Maria Poswick, was the last noble occupant of Château Neercanne. In 1947 she sold the castle of the " Stichting Limburg Landschap " ( Foundation Limburg landscape ). The castle was then in a very bad condition.

The only terraced castle in the Netherlands has been restored and was hired in 1955 by the Brand beer brewery ( Wijlre ). They founded a restaurant. In 1984, Camille Oostwegel the operation of Château Neercanne. Since then, three of the four castle terraces have been restored to its former glory and enjoy this today the protection of UNESCO. On 9 December 1991, the government followed the European member countries at the invitation of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands to a reception at Castle Neercanne.
