Châteaubourg, Ardèche

Château Bourg is a commune of 221 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes. Residents will (it) called Châteaubourgeois.

Geography

The community extends along the right bank of the Rhône in the northern part of the department. This Château Bourg adjoins the neighboring municipalities Bourg- lès -Valence in the Drome region adjacent to the opposite side of the river, as well as to the capital of the eponymous canton of Saint- Péray. The nearest major town is six miles southeast Valence distance.

History

Château Bourg was founded as a settlement on the banks of the Rhône boatmen and dominated for a long time of shipping. Ancient remains of a Christian altar, prove that the place was inhabited 2000 years ago by people. First mention was the community in 1270, when the French king Saint Louis on his Seventh Crusade in Châteaubourg a rest lodged before moving on towards Tunis. During the French Revolution the place wore the toponym Roche Bourg.

Culture and sights

The castle of the village with its medieval facade and the round towers dating from the 13th century, but was rebuilt several times in the 17th and 19th centuries. During the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution, the building was damaged several times and then restored. Since its completion, it changed hands several times. First, it belonged to the Clérieu family, then the Beaudiner before it finally came into the possession of Fay in the 15th century.

Also, the tower of the castle of Durtail is worth seeing as a historical monument, as well as the altar and the black Virgin representation of the local church. Furthermore, the borough is home to an old sailor cross. On the bank of the Rhone the cliffs of La Goule drops steeply down into the valley.

Economy and infrastructure

Previously, the economy of the community was dominated by the shipping industry. Large parts of the population were employed as sailors or sailors. Today, agriculture is the main source of income of the population.
