Chatham is a town in Columbia County in the U.S. state of New York, about 40 km southeast of Albany. It is located about halfway into the municipalities of Chatham and Ghent, is 1.2 square miles (3.1 km ²) in size and had in 2000 a population of 1758.

Chatham was once an important railway junction in the rail network of the New York Central Railroad. Here the railway lines Boston - Albany ( Boston and Albany Railroad ) and New York - crossed North Bennington ( Montreal ) (New York and Harlem Railroad ). Today is only the distance between Boston and Albany in long-distance running; the trains go by without stopping at the station. Interstate 90 (New York State Truway ) runs about 8 kilometers north.
