Chattooga County, Georgia
The Chattooga County is located in the U.S. state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Summerville. In the 2000 census, the county had 25 470 inhabitants and a population density of 31 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Geography
The County is located in northwestern Georgia, on the west by Alabama and is in the north about 50 miles from Tennessee away. It has an area of 812 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water, and bordered clockwise to the following counties: Walker County, Gordon County and Floyd County.
History
Chattooga County was born on December 28, 1838 from parts of Floyd County and Walker County gebildet.Benannt it was after the Chattooga River. Built in 1909, County Courthouse in Summersville is listed in the national database of Historic Places.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Chattooga County 25 470 people in 9,577 households and 6,837 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.71 percent White, 11.21 percent Black or African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.84 percent from other races groups; 1.02 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.11 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,577 households out of which 30.8 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.7 percent were married couples living together, 12.6 percent were single mothers and 28.6 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent of all households and 12.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.94.
22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 106.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,664, and the median income for a family $ 36,230. Males have a median income of $ 26,505, women $ 21,014. The per capita income was $ 14,508. 11.3 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
