Chauncey H. Griffith

Chauncey H. Griffith (* 1879 in Iron, Ohio, † 1956 in Butler, New York) was an American typographer and type designer.

Life

Since 1906 worked for Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Griffith in 1915 was assistant to the president of the company. In 1936, he became vice president of the company, with responsibility for typographical development. In this capacity, significant type designers such as William Addison Dwiggins and Rudolf Růžička worked for him. Especially his newspaper writings, such as the corona and the Excelsior have a very wide acceptance. Its developed for the telephone books of the Bell Company Bell Gothic inspired later, Matthew Carter for Bell Centennial.
