Chaves County, New Mexico
Chaves County is a county located in the state of New Mexico in the United States. The County has 65,645 inhabitants and an area of 15,734 square kilometers. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) and largest city of the county is Roswell. The county was named after the politician José Francisco Chaves.
Geography
The main rivers of the county are the Rio Hondo and the Pecos River. The county has an area of 15,734 square kilometers; including 11 square kilometers (0.07 percent) of water. The county borders in New Mexico in a clockwise direction to the County De Baca County, Roosevelt County, Lea County, Eddy County, Otero County and Lincoln County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 61 382 people in the county. There were 22 561 households and 16 085 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.95 % White, 1.97 % African American, 1.13 % Native American, 0.53 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 21.25% from other races groups; 3.12% were descended from two or more races. 43.83 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 22 561 households out of which 35.60 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.70 % were married couples living together, 13.70% had a female householder with no husband. 28.70% were non-families. 24.80 % of all households were individuals and 11.60 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.17.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 29.10 % under the age of 18, 9.40 % from 18 to 24, 25.30 % from 25 to 44 years, 21.50% between 45 and 64 years and 14.70% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.90 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.60 males.
