Cheboygan County, Michigan

Cheboygan County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Cheyboygan.

Geography

The County is located in the north of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bounded on the north by Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 2293 square kilometers, of which 439 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Presque Isle County, Montmorency County, Otsego County, Charlevoix County, Emmet County and on Lake Huron to the Mackinac County.

History

Cheboygan County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named after the Cheboygan River.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Cheboygan County 26 448 people in 10,835 households and 7,573 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 94.80 percent White, 0.25 percent Black or African American, 2.55 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.15 percent from other races groups; 2.05 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,835 households out of which 28.6 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers and 30.1 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent of all households and 11.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.87.

23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.2 percent 18 to 24 years 25.8 percent between 25 and 44, 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 17.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 33,417, and the median income for a family $ 38,390. Males had a median income of $ 30,054, women $ 20,682. The per capita income was $ 18,088. 8.7 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
