Cheektowaga is a town in Erie County, New York, United States of America. The name is an onomatopoeic transcription of the Iroquois Jei -ik -du -wa- ga, which means place of the wild apple tree means (Malus coronaria (L.) ). In the 19th century, his name is still Chictawauga.
Cheektowaga is the second largest suburb of Buffalo to Amherst and is home to some of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
History
Before the city was founded, the area to only the neuters, then for Seneca Iroquois. From the mid-18th century it was hunting and fishing ground for six different nations. After the Revolutionary War, here the vanquished settled at the expense of the former Buffalo Creek Indian Reservation. Here, many immigrants settled. Apollos Hitchcock built in 1808 the first cabin in the area of today's Old Town.
The city was founded on March 20, 1829 reduced on October 16, 1851 to its present size. The original agricultural area developed in the boom of the 1950s. Companies such as Westinghouse Electric moved into the area. It was a typical working-class area. But this boom is over. Today Walden Galleria is 150,000 square meters of retail space, the largest mall in the area of Niagara to Buffalo.
