Chef-du-Pont

Chef- du- Pont is a commune with 723 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes de Sainte- Mère- Église.

Geography

Chef- du- Pont is located 3 kilometers southwest of Sainte- Mère- Église and about 12 kilometers northwest of Carentan on the Cotentin Peninsula in the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin. The Merderet flows through the municipal area.

Attractions

The Castle Le Val dates from the second half of the 18th century. The pigeon house bears the date 1755. François Marie de Bricqueville ( a leader of the Chouannerie ) was imprisoned there in 1797, before he was executed by shooting in Coutances. The castle itself has changed dramatically in the 19th century. It is now in private ownership.

The Church of Sainte -Colombe was built in the 12th century. The nave was rebuilt in the 17th century, with only the general structure and the porch were preserved as a Romanesque elements. The choir has not been altered since its establishment. The southern door is adorned with a bas-relief depicting the struggle against Samson the lion. In 1954 the church was added to the supplementary list of Monuments historiques (historical monuments ).

Economy

The image of the church is dominated by willows, accordingly, the main economic activity of the Capipontains are the Breeding of cattle and hogs and dairy industry. There is a slaughterhouse on site. Local products are andouilles and smoked ham.
