Cheikh Raymond

Cheikh Raymond ( born July 27, 1912 in Constantine, French North Africa, today's Algeria, † June 22, 1961 ibid, born as Raymond Raoul Leyris ) was a French- Jewish Ma'luf musician ( singer and oud player), the for peaceful coexistence of Jews and Muslims in Constantine musical works composed. He was a master of his craft and sang in Arabic. Cheikh (Eng. " sheikh ") was a term of respect for the musician, who was recognized and revered by Jews and Muslims alike.

On 22 June 1961, he was shot from xenophobic or anti -Semitic motives of Algerian nationalists in the Place Négrier in Constantine in the Jewish market from behind.
