Chemainus

Chemainus is a municipality in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located in the Cowichan Valley Regional District on Vancouver southwest Iceland. The community is separated by several islands of the Gulf Islands, on the Strait of Georgia.

History

Chemainus traditional lives of forestry. 1858, the community was founded from a settlement of logging camps and the Chemainus Post Office was opened on July 1, 1871. In 1880 also reached the railroad on their way direction from Victoria to Nanaimo the community and led to further growth. However, the history of the settlement dates back further, since prior to settlement by Europeans, the area was already settlements and hunting grounds of the First Nation.

As a church, the settlement was first officially listed in the 9th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada from June 30, 1910

On 13 January 2006, a gutted Boeing was off the coast, in Stewart channel, 737 sunk as an artificial reef.

Demography

The census in 2011 showed a population of 3,035 inhabitants for the city. The population of the city has thereby increased since the census of 2006, only 3.3%, while the population in the province of British Columbia at the same time grew by 7.0%.

Traffic

In Chemainus is a ferry dock, the BC Ferries. From this terminal connections to Kuper and Thetis Iceland Iceland be served.

Furthermore, the Highway 1A runs directly through the church, during the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 1 ) west of the community passes.

Through the community also runs a railroad line of the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway.

Tourism

A major tourist attraction of the place are the 39 murals. The images depict scenes from the history of the place there.
