Chemical Abstracts Service

The Chemical Abstracts Service (abbreviated CAS ) is a division of the American Chemical Society, founded in 1907. Its official publication Chemical Abstracts ( CA), the world index all chemistry -related publications on the target and summarize for the Chemical Abstracts approximately 10,000 journals and magazines (as of 2010 ). The CAS is best known for her large databases of chemical compounds and their unique key, the CAS Registry Number, in German usually called CAS number. In May 2011, 60 million registered organic and inorganic substances have been achieved. Already in December 2012, this number rose to 70 million. The services and products offered by CAS are predominantly commercial. Of importance for the investigative access to the CAS ( and other ) technical and patent databases STN (The Scientific & Technical Information Network).

Software

The CAS publishes the commercial computer program SciFinder for searching the databases. SciFinder Scholar is limited in the search options version, which is often used at universities. Both include a graphical user interface which allow to search for chemical structures.
