The county captaincy Chemnitz was created in 1900 by division and spun off from the main county team Zwickau. In the Third Reich, the county home teams were renamed after the Prussian model in administrative districts. After the Second World War, the countries were smashed in the GDR. The four traditional Saxon government districts of Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and Zwickau were divided in 1952 by the SED regime in the three East German districts of Leipzig, Dresden, and Karl- Marx-Stadt.

Only with the re-establishment of the State of Saxony 1990, the basis for the formation of new administrative districts was created. The government district of Chemnitz comprised largely the territory of the former district of Karl-Marx -Stadt. In the course of district reform in Saxony 2008, the government district of Chemnitz was renamed Direktionsbezirk Chemnitz.
