Chen Danyan

Danyan Chen (Chinese陈丹燕, Pinyin Chén Danyan; * 1958 in Shanghai, People's Republic of China) is a Chinese writer.

Life and work

Already in the seventies appeared first texts in Chinese journals. After studying Chinese literature at East China Normal University (1978-1982), she worked as an editor for the journal Children's Epoch magazine.

Since the mid- eighties, it deals with the Chinese for the literature until then unusual topic of life and emotional world of adolescent girls. Also published in German on her autobiographical novel, Nine Lives (1992 ) she worked her childhood experiences of the Cultural Revolution. For this book, she was awarded the UNESCO Prize for Peace and Tolerance, and was nominated in 1996 for the German Youth Literature Prize. In the center of her recent work is an examination of the lives of the young generation in China, which is as a result of China has long been practiced family policies of the one-child family a generation of only children.
