Chen Ding-nan

Chen Ding- nan (Chinese陈定南/陈定南, Pinyin Chén Dingnan; born September 29, 1943 in Yilan, † November 5, 2006 in Taipei) was a Taiwanese politician.

After studying law at the National Taiwan University, where he graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Law, Chen worked in the economy of his home province.

In 1981, he was without a party, the first administrator of the Yilan County, which is not the decades ruling Kuomintang belonged to and was re-elected in 1985.

After the end of his second term in 1989 Chen successfully ran for Parliament ( Legislative Yuan ) for the constituency of Yilan and was then 1992, 1995 and 1998, re-elected. In 1993, he joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ). In 1994 he was defeated in his candidacy for governor of Taiwan Province to his rival candidate James Soong.

On 20 May 2000, the recently elected President Chen Shui -bian appointed him Minister of Justice. Whose government he was a member until 31 May 2005. During his tenure, Chen tried to push back against organized crime. In addition, was known as " Mr. Clean " known politician respected for his simple lifestyle and his closeness to the people.

End of 2005, Chen ran again as the administrator of Yilan County, but lost this time the candidate of the Kuomintang.

After several months of illness, he died on 5 November 2006 at the University Hospital in Taipei from lung cancer.
