His first try at an international championship he graduated in 1977 at the Asian championship. Of this, however, no results are known. In the same year he was then employed as a 19 -year-old athlete in the Senior World Championships in Stuttgart. He started there in the flyweight and made in cracking three failed attempts. In thrusting he managed 125 kg, but remained unplaced duel without result.

In 1978 he was Chinese champion bantamweight title with an output of 240 kg ( 102.5 to 137.5 ), which he, of 237.5 kg ( 105 to 132.5 ) overcame Ho Yichang, referred to the 2nd place. On April 14, 1978, he was in Canton in a Chinese team that played a friendly comparison campaign against the Federal Republic of Germany. He mastered there Bantamweight 247.5 kg ( 107.5 to 140 ) and picked for his country a point, because the FRG had the bantamweight title vacant. Then he started at the Junior World Championships in Athens in 1978, finishing there in the bantamweight title with 245 kg ( 107.5 to 137.5 ) 2nd place behind the Soviet lifter Pospelov, who came to 250 kg ( 110-140 ). Finally, he also took on the World Cup this year in Gettysburg (USA) part and came there with 242.5 kg ( 102.5 to 140 ) bantamweight on the 5th Place. He scored there with 257.5 kg ( 110 to 147.5 ), a new personal best, but with which he finished only 7th place in the overall standings. However, in an additional fourth attempt in pushing he made in Salonica with 153 kg another world record. If he had this weight encountered already in the third attempt, he had come to 2nd place in the overall standings and would have become world champion in bumping.

From the years 1980 and 1981 no results are known by Chen Weiqiang. He was also none of the international championships at the start. It should be noted that China did not participate in 1980 for political reasons at the Olympic Games in Moscow.
