Chenjerai Hove

Chenjerai Hove ( born February 9, 1956 in Mazvihwa, Zimbabwe ) is a Zimbabwean writer.

Curriculum vitae

After attending Catholic schools in Kutama and Detention Hove studied literature and English. In 1981, he was an editor at the publishing house Mambo Press, 1985 chief editor at the publishing Zimbabwe Publishing House. From 1984 to 1992 Hove was chairman of the Zimbabwe Writers' Union. After he had criticized the policies of Robert Mugabe, he was forced to leave his home. He went first to France and later to Norway from exile.

Works

Hove writes both in English and in Shona, the language of the largest ethnic group of the country. His poems first appeared in various magazines. The anthology And Now the Poets Speak, which appeared in 1980 on the occasion of the independence of Zimbabwe, includes 14 poems Hove. In 1982 he released his own first volume of poetry, Up in Arms. In 1985, the poetry collection Red Hills of Home. Both volumes of poetry received by the Commission of the Noma Prize for African Writing an honorable mention. Hove finally received the coveted award in 1989 for African Writing for his English debut novel Bones. Among other awards received Hove in 2001 including the Prize of the German Africa Foundation.

In Hove's novels each a protagonist at the center. Bones portrays a mother's efforts to find her son, who has disappeared in the chaos of the liberation struggle. In the novel, Shadows ( 1991) commits the main character Johana lovesick suicide. Ancestors (1996 ) is about the life of a young, deaf-mute woman. These three novels form a trilogy, has written a kind of chronicle of his country with the Hove.
