Chernorizets Hrabar
Monk Chrabr ( Bulgarian Черноризец Храбър / Chernorizets Chrabar, Old Bulgarian Чрьноризьць Храбръ / Černorizec Chrabŭr, such as " habit carrier Courageous " or " brave monk " ) is the pseudonym of the author of an apology for the Old Church Slavonic language from the 9th or 10th century.
Identity
About the identity of the " monk Chrabr " little is known. It is believed that he was a contemporary or older students of the Apostles of the Slavs. Some researchers recognize the pseudonym Constantine - Cyril himself, Clement of Ohrid, John Exarch, Naum, the Tsar Simeon the monk or Docs, a brother of Tsar Boris and count it for this reason, the representatives of the school of Preslav.
Work
About the letters
The only known work is Chrabrs O pismenech ( altbulg. Сказание о писменех; bulg.Сказание за буквите; . German About the letters ), a defense of the Slavic, probably Glagolitic, writing and the Slavic language against attacks by followers of the three language dogma and the Greeks. Chrabr describes the origin of the Slavic script and returns the year 863 as an invention years. He presents cultural, historical and philological arguments for his thesis that the Slavic languages have the same right to be used as a liturgical language, such as Hebrew, Greek or Latin.
Some authors date the work on the first years of the reign of Tsar Simeon ( 893-929 ), as there had been in the Christianized empire since 865 is an open quarrel between the Greek and Slavonic ( Bulgarian ) party to the church language.
Chrabrs writing helped the national orthodoxy to victory and found numerous imitators. There are about 80 copies exist in several editors, the oldest in a 1348 -built medium Bulgarian manuscript collection.
