Cherokee County (Iowa)

The Cherokee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 12,072 inhabitants and a population density of 8.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Cherokee.

Geography

The County is located in northwest Iowa, is in the north about 70 miles from Minnesota to the west about 40 miles from South Dakota and southwest about 45 km from Nebraska away. It has an area of 1,495 square kilometers without significant water surface and borders the following counties:

History

The Cherokee County was on 15 January 1851 as a free- designated - formed territory - but in reality populated by Indians. It was named after the Cherokee people.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Cherokee County 12,072 people in 5,327 households. The population density was 8.1 people per square kilometer.
