Cherokee County (Kansas)

Cherokee County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Columbus. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme southeast of Kansas, on the east by Missouri, on the south by Oklahoma and has an area of ​​1531 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Crawford County and Labette County.

History

Cherokee County was formed on 30 August 1855 as original county of free territory and is one of the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after the Cherokee, the still largest Indian people of North America.
