Cherokee is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, in the southeastern United States, in the eastern Cherokees have their headquarters.

It is the capital of the " Qualla Boundary Cherokee Indian Reservation ," which includes a 230- km ² area.

The area is heavily developed for tourism and is located in the Appalachian Mountains between the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Oconaluftee River.

Since 1950, Cherokee Indians lead in the summer season several times a week the open-air theater play " Unto These Hills ", which tells of the fate and the expulsion of the Cherokee.

Film set

The end of the film Stroszek by Werner Herzog in 1977 was filmed in Cherokee, as well as parts of the movie Forces of Nature with Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck in the year 1999.
