The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a breed recognized by the FCI from the USA ( FCI Group 8, Section 1, Standard No. 263 ). The breed is since 1964 the official State Dog of the U.S. state of Maryland.

Origin and History

The name derives from the breed is the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland / Virginia in the eastern USA. The earliest historical references date back to the 16th century. In the 19th century but he only entered correctly as a hunting dog breed to the public. They quickly became popular as hunting dogs for the marshes and waters.

Description

It is medium in size to 66 cm and 36.5 kg. The hair should be thick and short, nowhere over 4 cm, with dense, fine, woolly undercoat; the color of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever must be as close as possible to his work environment. Any color of brown, sedge or dead grass is acceptable. Monochrome Chesapeake are preferred.

Use

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was bred for hunting water. He must be able to break through the ice, enduring long swim in cold water and can dive after prey to retrieve them. In his homeland he is held as a hunting dog and guard dog. The breed shows protective behavior, which distinguishes them from the other retriever breeds.
