Chesterfield County (South Carolina)
Chesterfield County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Chesterfield.
Geography
The County is located in the north of South Carolina, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 2087 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Union County, Anson County and Richmond County in North Carolina, Marlboro County, Darlington County, Kershaw County and Lancaster County.
History
Chesterfield County was formed in 1798. It was named after Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, a British statesman and intellectuals.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Chesterfield County 42 768 people in 16,557 households and 11,705 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 64.34 percent White, 33.22 percent Black or African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.04 percent from other races groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.27 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,557 households, 33.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.6 percent were married couples living together, 16.3 percent were single mothers, 29.3 percent were non-families, 25.9 percent of all households and 10.0 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.5 percent between 18 to 24, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90 men.
The median income for a household was $ 29,483, and the median income for a family was $ 36,200. Males have a median income of $ 30,205, women $ 20,955. The per capita income was $ 14,233. 16.7 percent of families and 20.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
