Chevrier

Chevrier is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Chevrier is at 480 m above sea level. M., about 21 km west- southwest of the City of Geneva (air line). The village is located on a slightly inclined to the northeast slope at the foot of the Montagne de Vuache, on the southwestern edge of the lake basin, south of the River Rhone in Genevois, near the border with Switzerland.

History

The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Caprius. On Défilé de l' Ecluse fortifications were built in the 13th century, which were massively expanded later under Napoleon and Vauban. Until 1780, the community was officially called Chevrier -en- Vuache.

Attractions

The village church of Chevrier dates from the 15th century and has a beautiful Gothic portal. On the Montagne de Vuache is the chapel of Sainte- Victoire - de - Vuache.

Population

With 425 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Chevrier is one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1980s, a substantial population increase was recorded.

Economy and infrastructure

Chevrier was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are various businesses of the local small business sector. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area, but especially in the Geneva - Annemasse, their work.

The place is a good infrastructure. It is located on a link road from Vulbens after Génissiat and is easily accessible from the main road N206 that runs from Annemasse via Saint -Julien -en- Genevois to Bellegarde- sur -Valserine. Chevrier had a station on the railway line Annemasse - Bellegarde.
