Chevy Chase was dominated by agriculture until 1890, then began Senator Francis G. Newlands ( for Nevada) with business partners, the country in northwest Washington, DC, to purchase in the southern part of Montgomery County, to establish a settlement there. To this end, the company "The Chevy Chase Land Company " was founded in 1890, which was more than 6.9 square kilometers along the present Connecticut Avenue.

The name " Chevy Chase " was taken from one of the acquired land, which in turn was given in 1725 as " Cheivy Chace " by Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore an officer named Joseph Belt.

The name Chevy Chase can be traced back to a battle of 1388 between Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, and James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas. At that time it was about the Cheviot Hills on the border between England and Scotland.

As in other suburbs in the United States no colored people were allowed into the 20th century in Chevy Chase settle down. Francis G. Newlands was a " staunch racist", the settlement was initially designed so that only wealthy citizens of Washington were able to settle here, who possessed their own staff, the food and other commodities in the city worried. In the 20th century also cheaper houses were built, but were still reserved for whites.

From the 1920s on was explicitly forbidden, houses to " Negroes " or " semetic race" people to sell.
