Cheyenne is a town in Roger Mills County in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and also the administrative center ( county seat ) of this county. The population is approximately 778 (2000 ). The place is located on U.S. Highway 283 and Highway 47 at Oklahoma

Geography

Cheyenne is located at 35 ° 36'45 "North, 99 ° 40'26 " West and is therefore the "heart " of Roger Mills County. Cheyenne is located south of the Washita River, and has an area of 2.6 km ². The village is located about 250 km from the state capital of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City

22.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.8 % from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 23.8 % between 45 and 64 and 23.0 % were 65 years or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.60 males.

History

Cheyenne was the scene of the Battle of the Washita, in which George Armstrong Custer attacked on 26 November 1868 the 7th U.S. Cavalry Chief Black Kettle. About 100 people were in this massacre death.

In the 1970s it was discovered in the area major oil and gas deposits. From 1973 to 1993 230 million cubic meters of gas was produced.
