Chhattisgarhi ( Devanagari: छत्तिसगढ़ी or छत्तीसगढ़ी ) is an Indo-Aryan language that is spoken by about 11.5 million speakers. These are concentrated in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh and in adjacent areas of the states of Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Bihar. Cultural and political movements in Chhattisgarh claimed since the 1920s, a distinct cultural and linguistic identity and demanded greater autonomy within India. These efforts led in 2000 to the formation of the state of Chhattisgarh from 16 districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Classification

The most closely related languages ​​are the Chhattisgarhi Bagheli and Awadhi. All three languages ​​are classified into the group of Indo-Aryan languages ​​within the ostzentralindischen languages ​​, the Indian branch of the Indo-European language family. The Indian government, however, considered the language officially as an eastern dialect of Hindi, Chhattisgarhi although according to linguistic criteria can be considered as a separate language entirely. Chhattisgarhi is divided into different dialects, eg Baighani, Bhulia, Binjhwari, Kalanga, Kavardi, Khairagarhi, Sadri Korwa and Surguija.

Grammar

Like the closely related Hindi uses postpositions instead of prepositions also Chhattisgarhi, eg - kaa instead of " of". Unlike Hindi Chhattisgarhi but does not have an oblique, so postpositions can be appended to the end of the noun simply, without the noun itself changed.
