Chiasso Train Station is the station of Chiasso municipality in the Swiss canton of Ticino and is also a border station between Switzerland and Italy. His Italian counterpart is the Como San Giovanni station. He is in possession of the SBB and the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and is served by trains of the SBB, TILO and Trenord. It is located only a few meters away from the border, and is the southernmost station in Switzerland.

History

The station was opened in 1874, as the Ticino valley railways between Biasca and Chiasso and Locarno went into operation. In September 1876, the station received cross-border traffic, as was the section of Chiasso -Como, the last section of the railway line Milano - Chiasso in operation. The opening of the Gotthard tunnel and the Gotthard Railway in 1882, the station was part of the continuous north-south connection between Germany, German Switzerland, the Ticino and Italy.

With the removal of the locomotive change of ETR 470 CIS since its introduction in 1999 held no trains Cisalpino in Chiasso, well -run but the covering material with conventional compounds. After the accession of Switzerland to the Schengen Agreement of 2008, the official border control was discontinued, the Italian Guarda di Finanza and the Swiss border guards kept their offices at the station.
