Chiavenna

Chiavenna ( historically in Romansh and Latin: Clavenna, German: Kleven or Cleven ) is a town and valley ( Valchiavenna ) with 7342 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region Lombardy. It, together with the Valtellina Sondrio province.

Chiavenna is now known for its historic center and its restaurants. It is a member of Cittaslow, a company incorporated in Italy in 1999 motion to decelerate and increase the quality of life in cities.

Geography

Chiavenna is located about 25 km north of Lake Como, on the right bank of the Mera. It is the center of the Valchiavenna, the (up Castasegna ), the Val San Giacomo and the actual Val Chiavenna consists of the lower Bergell (south of Chiavenna to Pian di Spagna). In Chiavenna branch two already used by the Romans Alpine crossings. One runs northwards through the Val San Giacomo on the Splügenpass to Chur; this pass road was opened in 1822. The other leads first to the east by the Bergell (Val Bregaglia ) and then branches: the used by the Romans route went from Casaccia at the foot of the last ascent of the Maloja Pass over the Septimerpass (to date only a mule track ) on the Julierroute. Expanded as road, however, is the route over the Maloja Pass and then over the Julier Pass to Chur. Chiavenna largest neighboring municipalities are Piuro and Prata Camportaccio. With these two places Chiavenna is a settlement area of around 12,000 inhabitants.

History

From the late late antiquity to 1194 Chiavenna was the seat of the Counts who ruled the valley. In 1176 to the alleged knee case of Emperor Frederick I ( Barbarossa ) here took place before his cousin Henry the Lion. 1030 received from the diocese of Como Chiavenna the municipal law, in 1194 it was handed over to the bishops of Chur. Until about the Hohenstaufen period, it was part of the duchy of Swabia. In the 14th century the Visconti, the rulers had become over the Valtellina, Chiavenna the Contado acquired by the Bishop of Chur.

In the Mailänderkriegen 1512 succeeded the Three Leagues, the conquest of Cleven together with Bormio (Worms ) and the Valtellina ( Valtellina ) as a common peasant lands, the castle was destroyed. These valleys were again lost in 1797, they became part of the Cisalpine Republic, and share the fate of Lombardy.

Attractions

The best known is probably Il Castello be. Also worth noting are the monumental cemetery, the narrow streets and alleyways. One of them ends at the arch of Santa Maria. The Botanical Garden Paradiso is perfect for long walks, which are particularly attractive in spring and offer a beautiful view of the city from the high rocks. Is also worth visiting the cloister of San Lorenzo with the baptismal font from the 12th century and the Museo del Tesoro. Nearby Chiavenna are the waterfalls of Borgo Nuovo. The natural surrounding landscape offers both botanical and zoological peculiarities. North of the city, some glacial potholes can be visited.

  • Francesco Mitta (1662-1721), Baroque architect, went about 1690 to North Germany; a street in Chiavenna is named after him
  • Clyde Geronimi (1901-1989), emigrated in 1908, animator and director of the Walt Disney Studios
