Chicago Stags

Chicago Stags was the name of a U.S. basketball franchise of Chicago, Illinois, the 1946 to 1950 in the BAA, later the NBA, played.

Although the Stags existed for only four years, they could reach the BAA Finals, where they failed at the Philadelphia Warriors with 1:4 in games in the 1946/47 season.

History

Time in the BAA ( 1946-1949 )

The Stags were founded by several ice hockey team owners who wanted to expand the use of their halls in winter. The chairman of this group was, at the time included Arthur Wirtz, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Chicago Stadium.

In their first season, the BAA consisted of 11 teams and was divided into two divisions. The Chicago Stags played in the Western Division and were able to win this in their first year just before the St. Louis Bombers. In the regular season they were second overall behind the Washington Capitols with a record of 39-22. After they were allowed due to their good performance in the regular season skip the first play-off round, she finally stepped into the semifinals against the Capitol and were able to win 4-2 with the best- of-seven series. In the final series they eventually lost 4-1 against the Philadelphia Warriors.

In the following season 1947/48 the league consisted of only eight teams. The Stags were in their division, which now consisted of four teams, finishing second behind the St. Louis Bombers and also second overall in the regular season. To move into the play-offs they first had a play against the Washington Capitols won this contest and by four points. In the first play-off round, she then played against the Boston Celtics, who defeated them also. The next opponent was the later masters, the Baltimore Bullets, against the team lost and thus missed the second finals in a row.

The next year the number of teams in the league was significantly increased after among others, the Minneapolis Lakers and the New York Knicks of the BAA had joined. The Stags were third in their division with seven wins behind the First, the Rochester Royals. But that was enough for the play-offs to achieve and the team lost there again in the first round against the eventual champions, namely against the Minneapolis Lakers.

Time in the NBA ( 1949-1950 )

Even in the last season of the Stags was the number of teams in the meantime renamed in NBA league, once again increased. Nevertheless reached Chicago after the third, along with the Fort Wayne Pistons were in the division, the play-offs. The enemy came again from Minneapolis and the Stags lost this time in the first round against the Lakers.
