Chichagof Island

Chichagof Iceland ( in German transcription of the original Russian name Остров Чичагова also Chichagov ) is an island in the Alexander Archipelago in the Alaska Panhandle, in southeast Alaska. It belongs to the ABC islands of Alaska.

The island has an area of ​​5306 square kilometers, 121 km long and 89.1 km wide ( largest east-west extension of 95.8 km ) and to Kodiak and Prince of Wales Iceland 's third largest island in Alaska. The population of the island was 1342 persons in 2000.

Chichagof Iceland is located north of Baranof Iceland. It is limited by the Chatham Strait in the east, the Icy Strait in the north- east, the Cross Sound to the northwest, the Gulf of Alaska to the west and the Peril Strait in the south.

The communities Hoonah, Pelican, Tenakee Springs, and Elfin Cove are all located in the northern half of Chichagof Iceland, in Hoonah Angoon Census Area -. The southern half of the island forms the northern part of the City and Borough Sitka. Only 8 people were counted in this area in 2000. The main economic revenue sources for all these communities are tourism, fishing and logging.

Tourism

It offers guided hunting trips. It can brown bears, sea otters, seals, sea lions, eagles, seabirds and whales can be observed. Also, sea kayak tours are offered. In Tenakee Springs there are hot springs and public swimming. Hoonah is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska, also a starting point for fishing trips. Elfin Cove is a fishing village, built on stilts. In Pelican can fishing and hiking.
