Chickasaw County (Iowa)

The Chickasaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 12,439 inhabitants and a population density of 9.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is New Hampton.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Iowa, is in the north about 40 miles from Minnesota and the east about 80 km from the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Wisconsin and Illinois. It has an area of 1,309 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. At the Chickasaw County borders the following counties:

History

The Chickasaw County was formed on 15 January 1851 former parts of Fayette County. It was named after the formerly living in the south of Chickasaw Indians.

The first white settlers arrived in 1848 and the first seat of county government was in 1854 in Bradford, in the southwestern corner of the county. In spring 1857 the headquarters were moved to New Hampton, which was near the geographical center and then called Chickasaw Center. The first necessary offices of the County Administration were housed in private homes and the school building. It was not until 1865, the first courthouse was built, which was expanded in 1876 and was totally destroyed on March 26, 1880 fire.

In the American Civil War, the Chickasaw County on regional gained fame volunteer infantry regiment by the Chickasaw Souldiers of G- Company of the 27th Iowa.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Chickasaw County 12,439 people in 5,167 households. The population density was 9.5 people per square kilometer.
