Chiclayo

Chiclayo on the map of Peru

Chiclayo is a city in the north of the South American Andean country of Peru and the capital of the Lambayeque region with around 634,600 inhabitants. It is about 20 km from the Pacific coast to the Panamericana located and has an airport which is named after the Peruvian pilot and hero Capitán José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzales. The city is surrounded by intensively farmed area ( irrigated by the dam by Tina Jones). Chiclayo is the northern focus of the sugar cane processing, and a base for the dairy industry. Here the milk is processed, which is produced in the cool climate of the Andes located in Cajamarca Valley. Other crops around Chiclayo are cotton and rice.

Chiclayo was founded in 1560 (although this is not recorded in the Spanish historiography! ) And appointed by General Salaverry the capital of the Lambayeque region on 18 April 1835. The city is nicknamed "City of Friendship " or " CAPITAL DE LA AMISTAD ".

Chiclayo long stood in the shadow of the former provincial capital of Lambayeque before it experienced an economic boom in the 19th century.

In November 2007, archaeologists discover in Chiclayo about 4000 year old wall paintings. It is the oldest paintings which were discovered in America so far.

In the area of Chiclayo are numerous pyramids of the Mochica culture. In addition to two pyramids in Sipan site 30 km east of Chiclayo ( Huaca Ratjada ) major Royal Tombs of the Mochica culture were created. Since 1987, sixteen graves there were excavated with valuable adjuncts, among other things, were made ​​of gold, silver, shells, lapis lazuli and sound. The latest grave finds are exhibited locally in Sipan in the Museo del Sitio, the first spectacular finds, including the Lord of Sipan are exhibited in the Museo Tumbas Reales del Señor de Sipan, located in Chiclayo Lambayeque northern neighbor.

In Lambayeque is also the Museum of Brüning, showing a collection altperuanischer finds, mainly from the Pyramids of Túcume.
