Chicoana

Chicoana is the capital of the departments Chicoana in Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. It is located in the Valle de Lerma, 47 km southwest of the provincial capital of Salta. Chicoana is accessible via the Ruta Nacional 68 and the Ruta Provincial 33 In the classification of municipalities in the province it belongs with 4,468 inhabitants, the communities of the second category.

Chicoana is primarily dedicated to the cultivation of tobacco and in the second place the vegetables.

Tourism

Chicoana has in its architecture and its urban care retains the charm of a traditional, saltenischen place in which protrudes above all the central square. In addition to its location, far from the road, the (12 km) leads to the reservoir Cabra Corral and from there through the Quebrada de las Conchas to the wine town of Cafayate. Chicoana is also considered the gateway to the Quebrada de Escoipe on the road to Cachi, a further well-known tourist attraction in the province of Salta. The landscape was selected in 1941 as a stage for one of the classics of the Argentine cinema (La Guerra Gaucha ) over the independence struggle of the Northwest. Near the village there is a pre-Columbian archaeological site.

  • Festival del Tabaco (August 1 ): The " Thanksgiving " for the main agricultural product of the area, the tobacco.
  • Festival del Tamal: The is one of the tamal corn dishes of the North East and is at the center of the festival.
