Chief of the Boat

The Chief of the Boat (COB ) is the senior non-commissioned officer on a submarine of the U.S. Navy, most of the rank of Senior or Master Chief Petty Officer.

Generally

The COB reports directly to the Commanding Officer (CO ) was assumed, however, supports and advises the First Officer (XO) in matters relating to the order on the boat. There are only a COB on a boat. This is responsible for the daily service flow, morale and training of commissioned officers and enlisted personnel on board.

If a new sailor on board, he is usually the first encounter the COB. Although no direct chain of command of the COB stands above the sailors or under him, but he has a high authority in his position and virtually forms the head of an imaginary chain of command officers and enlisted personnel.

The road to post a COB starts with the proposal of CO, which sends it over the squadron commander of the Naval Military Personnel Command. If a sailor was nominated for the post, he shall be heard by a committee of other COB, then emit a recommendation for appointment.

The senior boatswain on board is also in the Navy and often also in the general merchant shipping as a " nautical No.1 " or Smadding.
