Chief of the Defence Staff (France)
The Chief of the General Staff ( full name French: Chef d' État - Major des Armées ) is the highest-ranking soldier of the French armed forces. All commands and units are subject to the Chef d' état -major de l' Armée ( CEMA ) and his staff in Paris. He is the military adviser to the defense minister and the government. Among his area of responsibility;
- The overall concept of military defense, including the planning and development
- The leadership of the armed forces.

- The commander in chief of the armed forces in the French overseas territories
- The commander in chief of the armed forces abroad ( COMSUP and COMFOR )

Position and powers
Headquarters of the General Staff is the Boulevard Saint- Germain in Paris. The Chief of General Staff is appointed by the President on the proposal of the Minister of Defence, but his term is not dependent on the Minister of Defence.
