History

At the present time dog hair is used only when hand spinning in private households or by small producers.

Extraction

The hair is combed or brushed, best during moulting, rare shorn (such as the Poodle ). The best location is the material of the shoulders and the back, the fibers of the hind legs and the tail of coarser, while those are indeed of very low staple length very soft, but often on the abdomen. Is in mixed -haired breeds very much or very coarse outer hair underneath, this needs to be sorted, otherwise it can be processed together with the woolly. In general, the hair is washed right after the extraction or the dog will be washed before combing itself. Proven hair is suitable for the following breeds for spinning:

• Border Collie
• Golden Retriever
• Tervueren
• Bernese Mountain Dog
• Bouvier des Flandres
• Pyrenean mountain dog
• Poodle.

Spun dog hair is water resistant, but not very elastic and in relation to its weight up to 80% warming than sheep's wool.

The yarn from dog hair is usually processed into knitwear such as sweaters, caps and the like, can be worn as outerwear or weather protective clothing.
