The Chiers ( Luxembourgish: Kuer, German: grain ) is river which rises in Luxembourg, Belgium briefly touched, mostly passing through France and flows into the Meuse some 140 kilometers as a right tributary south of Sedan. It is the only river in Luxembourg, which does not belong to the catchment area of the River Moselle.
Course
It arises under the name of grain at upper grain in the community Differdange ( Luxembourgish: Déifferdeng, German: Differdange ), then runs over Niederkorn toward the west, leaving approximately 14 km from Luxembourg and reach first at Athus, community Aubange, Belgian territory. Then it flows first as a Luxembourg- Belgian and then as a Luxembourg- French border river to France. Here it reaches the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle and crosses as Chiers the metropolitan area of Longwy. Then it forms a deeply carved and partly strong spiral below Longuyon valley. In Torgny (municipality Rouvroy ) it reaches the Meuse, making for about three kilometers the border with Belgium. A few miles west of it she winds around Montmédy. Half a straight line between this city and the valley of the Meuse, she turns northward and flows first through a ridge of this separately, at 20 kilometers, parallel to her. They reached at Margut the Ardennes department. After passing the city of Carignan it flows in to the municipal boundary of Bazeilles and Remilly- Aillicourt into the Meuse, just before it reaches Sedan.
