Chikuhoku (Nagano)

Chikuhoku ( Japanese:筑 北 村, -mura ) is a village in Higashichikuma -gun in Nagano Prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu.

Geography

Chikuhoku has an area of 99.5 km ² and 5,195 inhabitants (as of 1 February 2010). It consists of three parts (see story), which are separated by mountain ranges. There is no direct mountain road between the hamlets and Sakakita Sakai, Sakai which is a traffic engineering exclave. By Chikuhoku the rivers flow Omi and Tōjō. Neighboring municipalities are the cities ( shi) Azumino, Chikuma, Matsumoto, Nagano and Ueda and villages Ikusaka and Omi ( Higashichikuma -gun ), and Aoki ( Chiisagata -gun ).

History

Chikuhoku was created on 11 October 2005 by the merger of the previously independent villages Sakai, Honjō and Sakakita. Originally also the village Omi should be a district of Chikuhoku. But Omi said on 12 September 2004 not to participate in the local government reform.

Traffic

Chikuhoku is connected via the line Shinonoi to the JR East Japan Railway network. In Chikuhoku the stations Nishijō, Sakakita and Kamuriki lie.

By Chikuhoku leads the Nagano Expressway. In Chikuhoku although there is no junction, but two bus stops for express coach services between Nagano and Matsumoto. Furthermore, lead the national roads 143 and 403 by Chikuhoku.

Educational institutions

In each of the three districts there is one elementary school, which are carried from the village. There is also a middle school. Chikuhoku participates in the sponsorship of the Chikuhoku Middle School, however, is in the neighboring village of Omi. For adults there is a library.
