Childebert III.

Childebert III. (C. 678/679, † 711 before March 2 ) was King of the Franks 694-711 from the Merovingian dynasty. He was the son of Theodoric III. and the Chrodechild.

694 he succeeded his brother Clovis III. on the throne. He was probably, like his predecessors only de jure King of the Frankish empire, actually ruled the powerful House Meier and princeps francorum Pippin the Middle. In contrast to his predecessors and successors, he was buried in Choisy -au -Bac in Compiègne and not in the Merovingian grave lay, the Basilica of Saint- Denis. About a political activity nothing concrete is known. However, it is called the Liber Historiae Francorum ( "Franken Chronicle " ) of 727 a vir inclytus ( " great man " ) and bonae memoriae gloriosus dom ( i) minus Childebertus rex justus ( " the glorious Lord good memories Childebert, the righteous king "). How did this unusual judgment - the rest of his late Merovingian never be described by the Liber Historiae Francorum, in a similar way - is not yet fully understood. The same applies to the question why the king the burial in the family tomb of the Merovingian was denied.

Childebert was married. About his wife and mother of his children but nothing is known (see also: Incorrect Merovingian ). His children are Dagobert III. and probably Clotaire IV

The lack of concrete information in connection with the striking Findings of the author of the "Franken Chronicle " has led some researchers to suspect that Childebert could have tried again to actively intervene in the affairs of government, but ultimately failed because of the opposition of his major-domo. The poor source location makes it impossible until further notice, to clarify this issue.
