Childebrand I

Childebrand ( † after 751 ) duc ( duke ) of Provence, was a son of Pippin the Middle and his concubine likely (ie Childebrand had no claim to the legacy of the father). Pepin the Short was his nephew.

Life & Services

Today it is not clear whether Chalpaida, the second wife of Pippin, next to Charles Martel also the mother of Childebrand is. In the Fredegar Chronicle Childebrand is as germanus by Karl [ ie paternal brother, possibly müterlicherseits ( half brother or full brother ) ] denotes or as avunculus ( uncle) of Pippin the Younger. He has held a burgage in Burgundy and received from Charles Martel in the possession of Gau Belun.

With the battles in Avignon and Narbonne ( 737 ), against the invading Saracens, he served as a commander under Charles Martel. 739/740, in Burgundy, he served as a commander under Pippin the Younger.

Childebrand also maintained the second continuation of the Fredegar Chronicle until his death ( 751 ).

Progeny

His wife is unknown, but it brings the name Nibelung in the family with a, ie it could be the following:

  • Of Burgundian royal descent,
  • Of an Alemannic ducal family,
  • Or Thuringian royal descent.

From this marriage went Nibelung (* 705/720; † about 768) out.
